Yoga Before Bed: Staying Present for ZZZ’s

July 14, 2009

Getting to and staying asleep can be difficult.  You might be constantly thinking of what you need to do tomorrow – worries, burdens, plans. Or, you could be re-hashing what happened today…what you should have (or shouldn’t have) said, if only this would’ve happened instead of that.

Whether you find yourself in the first or second category,  [I've been in both - but tend to frequent the "thinking about tomorrow" box] yoga breathing and awareness can help you stay present which is one of your best chances of getting to and staying asleep.

Breathing Awareness Exercise:

Lying on your back, place one hand on your belly. Breathe in and out through your nose and feel your belly rise and fall.  Notice other areas of your body as you inhale and exhale.  The lower ribs expand, the chest lifts…Allow each breath to be a little longer, a little more full before you begin a new one. Try this for a few minutes – just observing how you breathe.

As you’re breathing, notice your thoughts.  Try to examine them as if they belong to someone else.  Place an imaginary post-it on each thought and as  you exhale, imagine setting it aside or releasing it as you exhale:  “Tomorrow’s big meeting”, “Sally’s doctor’s appt”, “what are we going to do about X”, “I can’t believe I said that to John” — label all the thoughts and let them go….

If just imagining each thought and releasing it doesn’t work for you, take 10 minutes and get up and go write down every thought or preoccupation in your head.  For me, my whiteboard in my office is great for this…I can unload everything there and go to sleep, knowing that I have everything captured for tomorrow.

Now back to the breathing….as you are categorizing and releasing thoughts, your mind will wander and think of new thoughts. That’s what the mind does. No worries – just acknowledge each one (even the most random) and let it go.  Allow the mind only to go to the present – allow your shoulders to draw down, your facial muscles to soften, your jaw to release….allow your eyes to get heavy and your breath to slow down….ah – sleep…..

Yoga for the Neck & Shoulders

June 29, 2009

I have clients that I’ve had in class for so long that I don’t even need to ask them what they want to work on at the beginning of class. We just have an understanding….when I see them, yes I think of their name, maybe their family but I also immediately think of what I most often hear from their lips: Neck & Shoulders.

Having come from Corporate America myself — I can relate.  Sitting at my desk in front of a computer monitor or laptop…hunched over the keyboard — powering through to get the assignment finished, meet the deadline. Frequent breaks? Who needed a break — I wanted to get it done so that I had that particular project off of my desk, out of my cubicle.  Sound familiar? And those were the good days — not the days that a boss drove me crazy with some unreasonable request or rumors of layoff’s permeated our office or (you fill in the blank)….With each new thing, the shoulders and ears united and the neck stiffened.

If this is you — there is relief…while I can’t promise a fulfilling and secure job I can give you some tips on minimizing the stress & strain for your neck and shoulders and some simple stretches when the stress & strain have already come to visit you.

  • Pay attention to how you sit at your desk. This is most important. A lot of our strain comes from poor posture habits.  Check out this blog post for posture basics:  Sitting Tall Throughout Your Day
  • Take frequent breaks – get up, take a walk, stretch….don’t power through. The only person who pays for that is you.  Every hour, try to get up and change how you’re sitting…not only will your body feel better…but your mind benefits as well.
  • Rest your eyes — even if it’s just a few minutes every hour, look away from your computer. Try to look out to different distances…take 30 seconds to just close your eyes and breathe.
  • Try these simple poses right at your desk to relieve neck & shoulder tension (takes 10 minutes or less):
  • Head Tilts — gently roll your head forward and tilt your right ear toward your right shoulder — hold for a breath or two and reverse. Continue slowly 4-6 times.
  • Shoulder Rolls — sitting tall at your desk with both feet on the floor, roll your shoulders up and back 4-6 times.
  • 1/2 Eagle — cross one arm in front of your chest and draw that arm closer to you with the other hand. Hold and breathe for 4-6 breaths, and switch sides.
  • Wrist Circles – gently roll your wrists in one direction 4 times and then reverse.
  • Forearm Massages – with your right hand, gently massage or knead the muscles of your left forearm (from your elbow to your wrist)…after a few breaths, switch sides.
  • Prayer Hands – bring your palms together in front of your body (allow the shoulders to rest down). Gently press the hands together.
  • Office Down Dog – stand up and place your hands flat on your desk. Walk backward and lower your upper body down so that you are making an “L” shape with your body. Feet are hip-width apart and ears are right by your biceps. Lengthen the spine and engage your belly. Breathe and hold for 4-6 breaths.

Introducing YogaXoga’s Demystified Yoga, Volume 2

June 21, 2009

YogaXoga Demystified Yoga, Vol. 2I’m so excited to introduce you to our latest yoga dvd: Demystified Yoga(TM), Volume 2, featuring three 20-minute classes for Neck & Shoulders, Lower Back & Yoga Before Bed, plus, helpful hints on great breathing techniques for stress relief and better sleep.

The inspiration for this DVD really came from my clients and blog subscribers (thank you!).  Stretches for the neck & shoulders and lower back are the most common requests I hear at the beginning of class.  Yoga stretches before bed is by far the most commonly searched for phrase that I see on my blog…  We’re living in stressful times and it’s difficult to let the mind rest so that our body can do the same. What better way to integrate a little bit of yoga into your day than by addressing the areas we most need help with in bite-size, doable chunks?

Sometimes we think a yoga class should be an hour or 90 minute experience set in the perfect environment when you have ample time to prepare, practice and enjoy the benefits of after-class stillness. While that sounds lovely, this isn’t reality for most of us! Each Demystified Yoga, Volume 2 class is just 20 minutes long so that even those of you with the most hectic, crazy schedules could creatively find 20 minutes (we all have 20 minutes, right?) just for you.  When you have more time, you can “play all” for an hour long practice.

DVD #2 Project: Video Shoot

April 23, 2009

So…we filmed the DVD this past Saturday…and after a long day with several twists & turns…I can report that it went really well…(after I see the first edit, I’ll be even more certain that it went VERY VERY well).

Amber getting me ready to go...

Amber getting me ready to go...

It started out as a dark, rainy, thunderous morning which didn’t quite cooperate with our lighting and sound needs.  The crew from Outpost made some adjustments and we were rolling… We started off filming the introduction where I’m talking about Demystified Yoga, what it is, what’s on this dvd, etc…After a few takes, we were good to go…

Next we filmed the Helpful Hints which go over three breathing techniques: 3 part breath, 2:1 Breathing and Left Nostril Breath…In this section, I’m instructing Alan, my yoga client on how to breathe for these breaths. This went really smoothly…with the exception of all the train whistles. We’re filming in the West Bottoms of Kansas City at a very cool place called The Foundation…in planning, I didn’t think about all the very colorful (and frequent) train whistles that come through…Since we were also recording the sound for this section, it was a bit of a challenge…but we got there!

We took a short break for lunch…our grip, Sam (and my loving husband) returned from his expedition around KC meeting all of our lunch needs: chai lattes, turkey sandwiches, Ginger Ann Juice from Coffee Girls, soup, etc….

Sam checking our set...

Then we were back to work… we filmed the 3 20 minute classes…Neck & Shoulders, Lower Back and Before Bed….For these, we didn’t need quiet – we were just capturing the video…I had already recorded the audio and we just played it back so that Alan and I could follow “the voice” and stay relatively together. We went through each class twice and then did some close-up shots of a few poses….

ahh…. finished.  wrapping up and walking out the door before 5 p.m….not too shabby…

excited to see the first edits later this week….

YogaXoga Shares: Love146.org & Child Sex Trafficking

August 29, 2008

In the last several months, I’ve been researching an issue that is so disturbing and horrific – Human Trafficking. I’ve spent many hours looking at government reports, browsing international, national and local organizations’ website working to fight this horrible issue. When we think about slavery, we think about history books – at least I did – an awful chapter of our history as Americans. But, slavery exists today – and in overwhelmingly higher numbers than our history books tell us.

Take a look at these staggering statistics:

  • It’s estimated that 27 million people are currently enslaved around the world — that’s more than double the Africans enslaved during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.
  • United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) now believes that the number of children trafficked annually is around 1.2 million. (2006)
  • It is estimated that two children per minute are trafficked for sexual exploitation.

In my research, I’ve found many reputable organizations, coalitions, alliances doing good work in the areas of education/awareness, rescuing and restoring these victims and prevention. Hearing the stories of those young girls have so stirred my heart that now that I know this, I can’t ignore it, I know I must do something – even if it’s through seemingly small steps, we must do something to fight Human Trafficking. Today, I’m highlighting one organization that really stood out to me that I wanted to share with you.

Beginning September 1 thru the end of 2008, 10% of every YogaXoga Demystified Yoga DVD purchase (whether on www.yogaxoga.com/dvd, on amazon.com or in person) will go to this organization – Love146. Read on to learn more about them.

Love146 works toward the abolition of child sex trafficking and exploitation through prevention and aftercare. Love146 trains aftercare workers, multiplies safehomes, aids socioeconomic development programs in high risk communities and provides a voice for these victims of modern-day slavery.

For those of you in the Kansas City area, the founder of Love146, Rob Morris is speaking at Church of the Resurrection, September 20th at the Justice Jam. We’re planning to attend and hope to see you there. Here are the details on the event: www.justicejam.com

You may be saying to yourself, “I thought this was a yoga blog…” and it is, but today I’m using my one small voice to tell you about something I don’t think we can ignore any longer… once we know, we have to do something.

Demystified Yoga

April 3, 2008

So this is a term that is likely new to most folks, except my students and those who have purchased my DVD (thank you!). When I tell people that I teach Demystified Yoga, I usually get one of two reactions. The first is, “Why does yoga need to be demystified?” and the second is a look of confusion: “What’s that?” So I’m taking a moment to explain what is Demystified Yoga and why I’ve felt the need to demystify yoga.

When I first started attending yoga classes, I loved the movements, the breathing, the general feeling of stress and worries begone – but I wasn’t comfortable with the more yoga-esque aspects of the class.  I’ll explain.  When the teacher would only announce poses in Sanskrit, I found myself looking around to the more seasoned students for a clue as to what to do.  Also, the imagery was a bit out there for my taste…I didn’t really want to root my feet into the earth…standing tall, grounded toward my yoga mat would have been just fine. And, as a Christian, I found the philosophies shared/discussed by the teacher not aligned to my beliefs (more on that later).

Now, for quite awhile, I told myself that was ok.  I got so much out of the other elements of yoga, that I would just tune those other things out.  When we chanted some Sanskrit phrase, I’d sit in silence or pray. But after awhile of this, I felt a burning question within me: Why should I have to tune this stuff out? Yoga has so many benefits in the poses, breathing, concentration and meditation – why not extract those things from traditional yoga to create a class where the health benefits can be enjoyed without wondering, tuning out or getting distracting by the more traditional and spiritual aspects.

Now I know this is not a popular view. Yoga, in its entirety is very popular, very mainstream. However I must remain true to who I am, trusting there are others out there like me…who are looking for a safe place to relieve stress, stretch hamstrings, strengthen core muscles, improve balance, etc.  Everyone who attends a Demystified Yoga class or buys a DVD knows that this is what they’ll experience.  You don’t need to tune out subliminal messages, wonder what we’re chanting, or feel intimidated because you don’t speak Sanskrit.

So that’s what Demystified Yoga is NOT…here’s what it is….We identify and learn all of the poses by their English names.  We focus on the practical health benefits of the poses and breathing techniques. I’ll often give you tips on how you can do poses at home and throughout your week. We modify poses to fit every body and not just the young, tall, thin and flexible. We end every class in Relaxation time, about 5 minutes of stillness & peace.

You’ll come away feeling stronger, calmer, clearer – ready for your day ahead. To learn more, go to www.yogaxoga.com.

Enjoy & be well…

YogaXoga Demystified Yoga DVD

November 7, 2007

I’m starting a new category to keep everyone updated on my exciting journey creating, producing and distributing YogaXoga’s first yoga DVD, Demystified Yoga. In what felt like a whirlwind that began last spring as just an idea, became 10 boxes of DVDs delivered to my house in July and is today becoming a growing part of YogaXoga.

Today was a very exciting day as the DVD will be available (at the end of this week!) at all of  the Borders and Barnes & Noble stores in the Kansas City metro! This is very exciting — the DVDs will be in the stores for the holidays and for new year resolution shopping.   [For those of you just learning about the DVD, you can learn more at www.yogaxoga.com/dvd  or search for Demystified Yoga on www.amazon.com to see all of our customer reviews! ]

I’m not sure if it was all the rest & sunshine in Hawaii (we had a great time!) or just the time away, but I came home with a new surge of energy and focus to share with more people that yoga doesn’t have to be just for the very fit & flexible!   It doesn’t require that you become a human pretzel or a highly enlightened pretzel.

I’m very excited and humbled at the amazing feedback through customer reviews and personal emails & notes regarding this DVD.  It’s truly meant for REAL people. It’s for people who want to relieve stress and chronic pain, feel better and move more easily. It’s for people who just need 30 minutes or an hour of movement, breathing and relaxation so that they can look at the busyness and stress of their life with new eyes, with a new perspective.   Those of you who are YogaXoga students know this – but the DVD enables many more people than I could ever reach in llive class to experience the many benefits of yoga.

Stay tuned for more…

Enjoy & be well,

 Heidi
